I primarily describe myself as a painter heavily rooted in material investigation and fiber processes: dyeing, sewing, thread, and needle. My work searches through and describes both literal and figurative landscapes of longing, desire, memory, and loss. Each painting tends to feature a central image of dyed and painted muslin, sewn into larger bodies of color, celebrated and embraced by rings of collaged forms saturated with vibrant stains and paint. Leftovers, scraps, and remnants of cloth are joined together with sprawling seams of mismatched thread. As my paintings are cut apart, sewn, bleached, re-dyed, and painted over, the images slowly collapse, becoming palimpsests of recycled memory and emotional resonance.

About the Artist
Cody Tumblin (b. 1991 Nashville, TN) currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. Recent solo projects include Devening Projects, Mild Climate, Good Enough, SPF 15, and The Outlet Gallery. Recent group exhibitions include No Place Gallery, Andrew Rafacz, Chicken Coop Contemporary, and Good Naked. Tumblin is a Hopper Prize Finalist and has been published in Art Maze 12 and Anniversary Edition 15. He recently released a community collaborative cookbook titled Today’s Special with Extended Play Press and will be showing new work at the Egg Collective in New York this Spring.
